The "Bamboo Ceiling” and Bamboo Ladder: Asian American Librarianship Leadership Obstacles and Opportunities
Very few Asian American library professionals are in senior library leadership positions. Persisting racism, microaggressions, and Asian stereotypes impact how many Asian American library professionals attain library leadership roles. However, mentorship opportunities, professional communities, advocacy, and activism are key to helping Asian American library professionals network, collaborate, and prove that they are capable library leaders. This presentation provides an overview of Asian American library leadership obstacles and opportunities, and suggests how further research can be done to better understand the climate of Asian American leadership in Hawai‘i’s libraries.
